Avec Creating Patterns, Dego McFarlane et Mark Clair sortent un disque quasiment à l'opposé du précédent Two Pages. Moins sombre et branché drum'n'bass, le duo explore ici les méandres d'un groove profondément influencé par le jazz. En effet, les noms qui viendront à l'esprit après écoute de ce disque sont ceux de Herbie Hancock, Weather Report et Miles, évidemment. Ces cousinages sont déclinés avec classe au long d'un cohérent kaléidoscope qui va du jazz-rock fréquentable (si l'on peut dire) sur "Twothesme" à l'electronica ludique de "Eight", du 2-step gonflé sur un des meilleurs titres de l'ensemble, "Hold It Down", à des orchestrations intimistes mâtinées de world sur l'ultime "Les Fleurs".
