Curtis Newton, alias le Capitaine Flam, est le fils des scientifiques William et Elaine Newton. Ses parents travaillent dans une station spatiale en orbite autour de la Lune. Avec le professeur Simon Wright (qui mourra prmaturment et dont le cerveau sera implant dans un robot volant, nomm professeur Simon par la suite), ils conoivent le robot androde Crag, ainsi qu'un androde pouvant changer d'apparence grce aux avances de la biologie molculaire, Mala. Lors d'une attaque, la station spatiale est dtruite. William Newton meurt et sa femme Elaine, grivement blesse, parvient s'chapper avec Mala, Crag et le Professeur Simon. Sur son lit de mort, la mre de Curtis demande que le nouveau-n consacre sa vie prserver la paix et l'ordre dans l'univers. Il est alors duqu par les trois compagnons de ses parents et, 18 ans, s'engage dans la lutte contre le Mal. Adulte, Curtis prendra le pseudonyme de Capitaine Flam .
