Because of Winn Dixie: A lonely young girl adopts an orphaned dog who helps her make friends in the small Florida town where she and her preacher father have just moved; But more important, the two of them bring the community together, and in the process, the young girl and her father are finally able to make peace over having been abandoned by the girl's mother. Flicka: Defying her stern, practical rancher father, a 14-year-old girl befriends a wild filly, and with her older brother's help, tries to buy the animal back from a rodeo entrepreneur by winning a wild horse race, only to nearly lose her again when a mountain lion attacks during the stormy trip home.
