Jimmy Picard, a Native American Blackfoot who fought in France during WWII, is admitted to Topeka Military Hospital in Kansas - an institution specializing in mental illness. Although he does not suffer any psychological causes for his painful symptoms, he is diagnosed as schizophrenic. Nevertheless, the hospital management decides to seek the opinion of Georges Devereux, a French anthropologist, psychoanalyst and specialist in Native American culture. Au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Jimmy Picard, un Indien Blackfoot ayant combattu en France, est admis l'hpital militaire de Topeka, au Kansas, un tablissement spcialis dans les maladies du cerveau. Jimmy Picard souffre de nombreux troubles : vertiges, ccit temporaire, perte d'audition... En l'absence de causes physiologiques, le diagnostic qui s'impose est la schizophrnie. La direction de l'hpital dcide toutefois de prendre l'avis d'un ethnologue et psychanalyste franais, spcialiste des cultures amrindiennes, Georges Devereux.
