Amazon.ca Inescapably huge when it came out in 1991, Mad Mad World is best known for launching Tom Cochrane's hit "Life Is a Highway." The album remains the singer-songwriter's commercial apogee, though some fans may argue that it doesn't measure up to his earlier work with band Red Rider. It earned him the best reviews of his career, and its big, enthusiastic sound captures the culmination of decades of work: Cochrane was pushing 40 at the time of its release. Some aspects of Mad Mad World haven't aged well. The production, typical of its time, aims for grandiose but comes off as overinflated. Still, a few less wanky guitar solos and today the disc could classify as an alt-country record. It wouldn't even be far off the mark to suggest that Cochrane, with his slick, jangly boogie and dust-kicking roots-rock anthems, beat much-hyped alt-country poster boy Ryan Adams to this sound by a decade.
