Bachir Lazhar is a middle-aged Algerian immigrant seeking political refuge in Quebec. Bachir jumps at the opportunity to replace a Montreal elementary school teacher who committed suicide one night after class. The school's overworked principal is initially relieved. Personnage un peu nigmatique ayant lui aussi vcu un drame, Bachir Lazhar va prendre en charge une classe fragilise et les aider passer travers leur deuil par lentremise de lacte fondamental de lenseignement. l'cole, personne ne connat sa vie algrienne et ne se doute qu'il risque l'expulsion du Canada tout moment.
