Amazon.ca Gatineau, Quebec-based vocalist Eva Avila is far and away the closest that Canadian Idol has ever come to a world-class vocal contender along the lines of Kelly Clarkson. And, Avila's record company is investing in her bankable potential, having solicited the songwriting talents of Chantal Kreviazuk and Cyndi Lauper and composers for Celine Dion and Beyoncé to contribute to Somewhere Else. The disc opens with Avila's first single, the Fergie-esque "I Owe It All to You" which aptly displays the vocal prowess this young artist delivers. "Not So Different" is even more infectious with a South Asian flavour and a funky chorus that evokes Timberlake comparisons. The Kreviazuk-penned "Meant to Fly" is a capably handled inspirational number, while "Should I Fall" shows her ability to excel at straight-up traditional R&B. In such genres, it is easy for a singer to oversing (cramming too many notes in a riff and losing the melody as a result) but Avila is never guilty of that and stays true to her unabashed love of strong, soulful pop. "I Don't Wanna Cry" and "Weak in the Knees" drive that point home. Avila's vocal talents and the disc's timeless melodies deserve to be heard by listeners from a number of different generations. --Denise Sheppard Product Description First album from Canadian Idol's Season 4 winner.
