Amazon.ca Where Volume 1 of this collection focused on the brothers' studio recordings, nearly half of this instalment is taken up with the electrifying live versions of "Funky Sea, Funky Dew", "Skunk Funk", "Sponge" and "Squids" which lit up the brothers' 1978 album, Heavy Metal Bebop. This is the peak of 1970s' jazz-fusion, with jazz the operative word. Randy Brecker sought to lay chordal colour and melodic sophistication he liked in bebop across funky backgrounds inspired by Herbie Hancock and Sly & The Family Stone, and the result was a new sub-idiom of jazz. His ingenious and detailed orchestrations and deliciously piquant harmonic sense are especially clear in the storming "Skunk Funk", complete with the brothers' wah-wah inflected sax and trumpet solos. The presentation, including full personnel and detailed liner notes, is excellent. -- Mark GilbertFEATURES
