C'est après un premier single sorti par Island que le groupe entre en studio pour réaliser ce qui demeure, avec Stand Up, Benefit, Aqualung et Thick As A Brick, comme un de ses grands classiques fusionnant la musique traditionnelle folklorique à la musique progressive (teintée de blues) alors très en vogue et en plein devenir. This Was révèle au public la virtuosité de son leader, le flûtiste et chanteur Ian Anderson très inspiré par le jazzman Rashaan Roland Kirk dont il reprend ici le thème et les gimmicks de "Serenade To A Cuckooo" où celui-ci chantait dans son instrument. Par ailleurs, l'album met en lumière un excellent guitariste qui quittera le groupe après cet enregistrement pour monter le progressif Blodwyn' Pig et sera remplacé par le non moins épatant (et plus hard) Martin Barre dès Stand Up. --Hervé Comte
