À Berne, le professeur de latin Raimond Gregorius rencontre une Portugaise qui s’apprête à se jeter dans les flots de l’Aare. Déterminé, il s’interpose et sauve la jeune femme. Il l’amène dans le lycée d’où elle disparaît cependant quelques instants plus tard. Il ne reste d’elle qu’un imperméable dans lequel il trouve le livre d’un auteur portugais et un billet de train pour Lisbonne. Raimond abandonne tout et prend le train de nuit pour Lisbonne poury apprendre davantage sur l’écrivain qui pose dans son livre précisément les questions qui le taraudent depuis des années. Raimund Gregorius is a high-school Latin teacher in Bern. His life is transformed following a mysterious encounter with a young Portuguese woman, whom he manages to save from jumping to her death in the icy waters of the Aare. Raimund is intrigued but the woman disappears, leaving behind her coat. Inside it he discovers a book by a Portuguese writer, which contains a train ticket. He spontaneously decides to use it, setting off on an adventurous journey to Lisbon. Ultimately his journey transcends time and space, touching on matters of history, philosophy, and medicine,encountering love and evolving into a liberating search for the true meaning of life.
