In 1977, in a Northern England town, eighteen year old Vince Smith (Michael Legge) works as a lowly clerk in a legal firm. He is painfully shy and can't bring himself to stand up to his overbearing boss (David Thewlis: The Big Lebowski) or to ask out his co-worker Joanna (Laura Fraser). Vince's father, Harold (Tom Courtenay: Nicholas Nickleby) is a retired clerk who likes the quiet life, while his wife (Lulu: To Sir, With Love) prefers a more rigorous nightlife, especially in the company of well-built young men. Vince is oblivious to all as his attentions are firmly focused on disco and emulating the moves of his hero John Travolta. One Christmas Day, Harold performs a party trick that astonishes the entire family. Vince has his life turnde upside down when his father's unlikely knack for performing mysterious tricks catapults the Smith family into the limelight and he meets an exotic punk girl. Also starring Stephen Fry (Gosford Park, A Fish Called Wanda).
