Antisémite virulent, nazi et fasciste, Adrien Arcand (1899-1967) est le leader historique de l’extrême-droite canadienne. Surnommé le führer, il fonda et dirigea le Parti national-chrétien puis le Parti de l’unité nationale, dont les milices arboraient fièrement la croix gammée. Grand admirateur de la puissance impériale britannique, il défendait un fédéralisme autoritaire, raciste et centralisateur. Arcand était au centre d’un vaste réseau international où l’on retrouvait le britannique Sir Oswald Mosley, des dignitaires du parti National-Socialiste allemand, des fascistes italiens et personnalités tels que l’écrivain Louis-Ferdinand Céline. Malheureux en affaires, ses journaux, dont le Goglu, durent fermer leurs portes, il gagna longtemps sa vie comme journaliste grâce au soutien de riches protecteurs. Interné pendant la guerre, il ne se laissera pas ébranler par les horreurs de l’holocauste et poursuivra son combat jusqu’à la fin de ses jours.
