Dans la chambre de motel où l'officier des Narcotics, Cal Moore, est retrouvé mort, l'inspecteur du LAPD Harry Bosch se fait éconduire par sa hiérarchie : l'homme s'est suicidé, affaire classée. Mais Bosch n'y croit pas une seconde : certes, les faits sont bel et bien là mais, pour l'inspecteur, seul le lien entre eux compte. Et les choses se corsent rapidement : Harry Bosch se retrouve face à des meurtres liés à un trafic de drogue qui court d'Hollywood Boulevard jusqu'à de lugubres contre-allées au sud de la frontière avec le Mexique. Se noue alors un dialogue fascinant entre Moore et Bosch, avec pour fil conducteur la "glace noire", une drogue nouvelle et très recherchée. Bosch comprend vite qu'il risque gros.
